Nomination Guide - Youth Action Board of Governance

Youth Action is accountable to a community-based Board of Governance.

The Board is responsible for the governance of Youth Action, and is made up of 9 individuals who are elected by Youth Action members at an Annual General Meeting (AGM). Board members hold their positions for up to 3 years.

The 9 elected members include a Chairperson, a Deputy Chairperson, a Treasurer, a Secretary and five Ordinary Members.

 

What positions are available?

There are 4 positions open for nomination this year:

  • Deputy Chairperson
  • Secretary
  • Two Ordinary Members

 

What is involved in being a Board Member?

Board meetings

Board members meet every 3 months in Sydney. The meetings run for about two hours, and the dates are chosen by the Board. Youth Action covers all transport costs to attend.

Time commitments may change as roles or responsibilities evolve. Board members are expected to take part in planning and evaluation days when needed.

Other Board responsibilities

Board members may participate in project advisory committees, public speaking at major events, meetings with relevant ministers and departments, speaking with the media, and involvement in monitoring/responding to government policies and proposals.

Who can be a member of the Board?

Board members are members of Youth Action, and are representative of Youth Action’s membership base.

Youth Action has three membership types:

  1. Young members aged 12 – 25
  2. Organisational members
  3. Individuals who work in the youth sector (26 years and over)

How can you nominate for the Board?

Any member of Youth Action can nominate to be on the Board. Organisational members may nominate one individual that is involved in their work, either paid or unpaid.

To nominate, download the forms and:

  1. Scan and email them to: [email protected]
  2. Post them to: Attn: Operations Manager, Youth Action, Suite 401, Level 4, 52-58 Williams Street Woolloomooloo NSW 2011.

All nominations must be received by Youth Action by 5pm, Friday 13 September 2019.

Nominee details will then be shared with Youth Action members for the voting process on Monday 16 September 2019.

How are Board Members elected?

The nominee with the most votes for a position will be successfully elected at the AGM as a Board Member.

Youth Action members have one vote per Board position.

To vote, you should attend the AGM on Monday 30 September 2019 and submit a vote in person.

If you cannot attend the AGM, but still want to vote, you can submit a proxy vote by:

  1. Using an online voting form
  2. Nominating a member to who is attending the AGM to submit a vote on your behalf.
  3. Downloading a form and emailing it to: [email protected]
  4. Downloading a form and posting it to: Youth Action, Suite 401, Level 4, 52-58 Williams Street Woolloomooloo NSW 2011.

Proxy voting forms will be made available on Monday 16 September 2019.

Before the AGM, Youth Action will appoint a member to be a Returning Officer, who will tally the votes and manage the voting process at the AGM.
